HOUSE IN THE HILL FARM

Poultry Meat Production on our Farm

Our Cornish Cross meat birds are raised exclusively on pasture.  Our birds are moved in their mobile hoop house – the hoop house is moved 1-2 times a day within a larger day range paddock enclosed in 100’ long Premier 1 electric netting.  The paddock is moved every few days to a week or so. As the birds get older and larger, they make more mess; hence, the more often they need to be moved.  They get constant access to grass and bugs and fresh air during the day, and stay inside the hoop house safe from predators at night with the double protection offered by the electric netting and the hoop house.

The hoop house itself is modeled after the plamondon style hoop house (http://www.plamondon.com/wp/better-chicken-tractors-hoophouse-chicken-coops/).

The new digs - the 2nd generation version! The hoop house

This house is basically a wooden bottom frame enclosed by cattle panels, giving it structural integrity, and ¼’’ hardware cloth.  It is covered with a tarp providing shade and shelter from the elements.  It is open on both ends, which provides plenty of air movement in our warm, humid Georgia weather.  The tarp also has partial roll-up sides to facilitate more air movement if needed. We hope to have this mobile tractor double as a brooder as well, simply adding a raised, wooden floor to keep the chicks off the ground.

The birds are fed a non-GMO feed and have access to fresh well water with a splash of apple cider vinegar in the water to aid digestion.  We try to take great care of our birds.   We hope you will agree once you taste our delicious birds.  And oh, the best way we have found to cook them is to spatchcock them in the oven.  A good recipe is included here……

Prior to partaking with fork and knife, however, we process all of our birds here on the farm as humanely as possible.   No long trip to a processing facility in untold kinds of weather… none of that.  They live their entire lives, save their first 2-3 days of life when they are shipped to us, on this farm.  Additionally, we freeze the carcasses after a 48 hour chill time to ensure unbeatable freshness from our farm to your fork. We price our birds at $4/lb.  The average carcass weight is 5-7 lbs., a medium to large sized chicken, though we do have 3-4 lbs birds available as well.
